Course Description:

The NRA Basic Pistol Course was developed to teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely.

Course Prerequisites:

You must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Person - a natural person who is a lawful permanent resident as defined in 8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(20) or who is a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) to participate in this course.

Online Course Delivery

This course is taken and completed online.  You can take the course at any time, 24/7 from any computer using your log-in and password.  If you exit the course before completing it, when you return you can pick up where you left off.  This course is comprised of instructional screens combined with audio narration that serves as the voice of the instructor.  

***Before advancing to Phase 2, student must complete Phase 1 with a score of (90% or higher)

 

Phase 2

Approximately 5 – 6 hours of Classroom discussion, hands on proficiency demonstration with 3 different action handguns, simulator training / target practice, and live fire range practice / qualification.  See “Course Outline” below:

Course Goal:  To teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely.

 

Exercise 1:  Firearm and Range Safety

Setting: Classroom and/or range

Learning Objectives:

  1. The three NRA rules for safe gun-handling.
  2. State range rules.
  3. Identify range commands.

 

Exercise 2:  Fundamentals

Setting:  Classroom and/or range

Learning Objectives:

  1. Determine your dominant eye.
  2. Assume a proper two-handed grip.
  3. Demonstrate the five fundamentals of pistol shooting: aiming, breath control, hold control, trigger control, and follow through.

 

Exercise 3:  Loading, Cocking, De-cocking, Unloading, and Pistol Maintenance

Setting:  Classroom and/or range

Learning Objectives:

  1. Load, cock, de-cock, and unload a single-action revolver.
  2. Load, cock, de-cock, and unload a double-action revolver.
  3. Load, cock, de-cock, and unload a semi-automatic pistol.
  4. Review how to safely clean a pistol.

 

Exercise 4:  Shooting Positions and Shooting Qualification

Setting:  Range

Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the learning steps to assume the bench rest position, and shoot from the bench rest position.                                                                                                        

NOTE:  This portion of the exercise will be conducted in the classroom using firearm simulators with a resetting trigger, sights and a laser sensitive target which will reflect shot placement.

  1. Demonstrate the learning steps to assume the Isosceles position, and shoot from the Isosceles position.
  2. Practice shooting in preparation for shooting qualification.
  3. Shoot the course qualification to highest Level of students ability. (Qualification at Level 1 is required for course completion/graduation, additional levels are optional)                                                                                                      NOTE:  The instructor shall furnish the range time, targets, gun and ammo (up to 220 cartridges of .22 cal ammo) for practice and qualification. (You may use your own gun and ammunition should you so desire.  Use of personal gun and ammo will not change tuition costs)
    1. Qualification for Level 1: Red is four five shot groups within the four-inch target at 10 feet.
    2. Qualification for Level 2: White is four five shot groups within the four-inch target at 15 feet.
    3. Qualification for Level 3: Blue is four five shot groups within the four-inch target at 20 feet.

Instructor Level Qualification (Level 4)

Instructor shall afford the opportunity to allow the student to shoot to the same qualification standard that an NRA Certified Instructor must shoot.  For Level 4, the NRA Instructor Training Qualification Target will be utilized.  To qualify Level 4, the student will shoot 20 shots from 45 feet and place 16 or the 20 shots within a six inch group.  By placing 16 of 20 shots within a six inch group the student will earn Level 4 endorsement.

 

Note:  Personal gun selection is discussed during Phase II.

Additional training:

Should the student purchase a new or used handgun from Ken & Deb Guns LLC before training begins or concludes, student will receive additional range time to learn how to shoot their new handgun.  Also included is instruction on loading, maintenance, and complementary box of target ammo for the chosen handgun* (* some exclusions apply, see instructor).

Additional training beyond what has already been discussed is available.  Discuss rates with instructor.

 

Summary

What you receive:

Approximately 16 - 17 total hours of instruction which includes on-line, classroom, laser range, and actual range.

Use of gun (.22 cal) with ammunition (220 rounds, .22 cal) supplied for practice and qualification

2 – 3 hours combined of laser and actual shooting range time.

At a minimum, certification with certificate for Level 1 marksmanship.  Higher levels achieved during training/qualification session will be annotated on the certificate.  Should student desire an Instructor Level rating, additional levels can be attained at a later date for an additional fee. (discuss with your instructor)

Certification with certificate for successful completion of NRA Basic Pistol Course (aka Gun Safety Course) allowing for Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) Permit application.  Instructor will assist with competition of application.  Cost to apply for CCW is not included in this course.

*****ADDITIONAL NOTES*****

Course tuition once paid is non refundable.  In the event student cannot start or complete training as initially planned, student will be transferred to a later class.  In the event student fails to acheive Level 1 Marksmanship with the allotted ammunition and range time, student may purchase additional ammunition, range time, and instructor time at the rate of $60 per hour all inclusive.

Purchase of gun before or during this course and we will include training (shooting & maintenance) and 1 box of ammo (50 rounds) for the gun.
